What is Alpha Theta Neurofeedback?

Our brain produces different brainwaves when it is completing different tasks. When we are having a conversation or problem-solving, our brain is using beta waves, which oscillate quickly. Alpha waves are produced when we are in a state of calm alertness, such as during yoga or meditation. Theta waves are slower waves that are produced when we drift into sleep or out of sleep, or when we daydream. Theta waves often produce a dreamlike state.

In alpha theta neurofeedback, we intentionally bring you into a deeply relaxed “twilight” state while reinforcing your brain’s production of alpha and theta waves. This is a similar state to the one you might experience as you calmly drift into sleep at night. While in this relaxed state, the conscious mind relaxes its control over your brain, and your unconscious mind largely takes over. The production of theta waves can bring up memories, images, thought patterns, and deeply ingrained patterns that “live” beneath our conscious awareness. Because these occur within the context of calming alpha waves, this type of neurofeedback can help individuals process and resolve trauma in a gentle way. In this relaxed state, your brain can let go of what it has been holding on to and organize sensory information, memories, thoughts, or feelings that have become “stuck” or frozen in your nervous system. In this relaxed state, the brain can also produce imagery and ideas that enhance creativity and intuition.

Alpha-theta neurofeedback can be extremely helpful in releasing learned habits and fears, including addiction. It can also be incredibly helpful in resolving past trauma. However, your nervous system has to be ready to undergo this type of neurofeedback. Most clients need to undergo several sessions of EEG neurofeedback first in order to calm their system down and help them feel ready to cope with whatever might arise in an alpha theta session.

What is an Alpha Theta Neurofeedback session like?

During a typical alpha theta session, you will relax in a recliner with your eyes closed. We will offer you an eye mask and headphones so that you can feel immersed in the experience, without distractions. Some clients like to snuggle up in a blanket or hold a stuffed animal that provides additional tactile feedback. You will be hooked up to electrodes that reinforce alpha and theta waves. When your brain produces more alpha brainwaves, you will hear the sound of a bell. When it produces more theta brainwaves, you will hear a gong sound. You will also hear the sound of intermittent crashing waves, which also reflect the interchange of alpha and theta brainwaves. Your only job is to relax and allow your brain to do whatever it needs to do, and to observe and enjoy the journey.
